About Issue 15.1 + Authors

As the year rolls to an end, we couldn’t be more thrilled to have had such a great term for The Garden Statuary. We received a total of 125 submissions for this edition, including 33 academic, 59 poetic, 19 prose and nonfiction, and many more beautiful pieces. It’s safe to say that selecting our final pieces proved to be as difficult as ever! We thank everyone who submitted their work, and extend congratulations to all our contributors who have been published! Below you’ll find a little more about each of our lovely contributors.

Amy Norris

Amy is a fourth-year student majoring in Honours English Literature and minoring in Sociology. Despite being a first-time author with The Garden Statuary, she previously worked as an editor, and has loved getting a glimpse into the other side of the edits. She is also currently working on the journal’s brand new Archival Project, which has allowed her to dig around and recenter its undocumented history. In her studies, Amy is particularly interested in eighteenth and nineteenth-century literature, queer studies, and literature on the body. And, as a library employee, English student, and audiobook enjoyer, Amy is almost always drowning in words—but no need to send help, she’s perfectly content there!

Mathew Fu

Mathew is a third-year Cellular, Anatomical & Physiological Sciences (CAPS) undergraduate student. Outside of answering phone calls at the clinic, listening to overplayed music and culturing brain cells in the lab, he enjoys spending time with friends and experiencing all that Vancouver has to offer. He is interested in how medicine, research and language intersect with hopes of pursuing a career that integrates these distinct fields.

Sydney Sanscartier

Sydney is a third-year English Literature and Language major at UBC. They’ve written several works of fiction and are looking to pursue writing professionally in the future. When not studying or writing, they enjoy hanging out with friends, crafting, reading, and watching movies.

Natalia Mohar

Natalia is a fifth-year English Language and Literature major. As her degree suggests, she loves studying languages and reading. She also enjoys (re)watching sitcoms, listening to musicals, and identifying different birds and plants she comes across.

Vivian Bruce

Vivian is a third-year undergrad in the Honours English Literature program and minoring in Creative Writing. Overall, she is a massive nerd. When she isn’t reading, painting, or losing her mind over schoolwork, she’s probably getting beaten up in a Taekwondo class.

Anika Islam

Anika is a fourth year Honours English Literature student with a Minor in Nordic Studies at UBC. She currently works in a research and teaching intensive position as a TA in the CENES Department and serves as the Editor-in-Chief of The Scanner, the UBC undergraduate journal for Scandinavian and Nordic Studies. In her free time, Anika can be found baking for fika, trying to catch up on her ever growing TBR, or on her millionth rewatch of Merlin.

Dalia Currie

Dalia is in her fourth year as a creative writing major at UBC. As a playwright, Dalia enjoys bringing theatrics into her prose through experimentation with form and style. She is thankful for this opportunity and the hard work from the team at The Garden Statuary!

Juliana Pombo

Juliana is a Colombian third-year BFA student in Visual Art with a strong interest in figurative and hyperrealistic painting. Drawing inspiration from nature, animals, and the human experience, her work explores the beauty and complexity of life through the lens of hyperrealism. She primarily works with oil and acrylic on canvas, inviting viewers to reflect on contemporary lifestyles and our evolving relationship with the natural world.

Maya Brown

Maya is a fifth-year student majoring in Honours English Literature and minoring in Law and Society. She is interested in decolonial literature, critical race theory and their intersections with the legal system of Canada. Outside of her academics she stays very well informed on the female rap industry and reality television.

Eva Chaudhary

Eva is a third-year student pursuing a double major in English Language and Literature and Visual Arts. Her artistic practice bridges the visual and the literary, she views her artwork as a visual mode of writing poetry. Working primarily in oil painting, Eva tries to blur the boundaries between language and image to create lyrical spaces within her work.

Millicent Sharman

Millicent is a third-year Honours Biochemistry student with a love for literature. An admirer of the ruminant and dreamy, she draws inspiration from Oliver and Siken, among others. When not writing lab reports and stage managing, she can be found on photowalks, birdwatching, and stopping by the symphony.
